8 Must-Have Products to Allergy-Proof Your Home

There are all sorts of common allergens that can be present in your home and cause a problem for you, like dust, pets, mould, and pollen. Whilst there’s no cure for these allergies, you can take steps to reduce your exposure and limit the allergens in your home.

If you’re wondering how to allergy proof your home, below are the eight best products to help to relieve the discomfort of allergies.

Air Purifier

An air purifier is vital for clearing allergens from the air and helping you to breathe easier. Our TruSens air purifiers with the speciality Allergy and Flu Filters capture up to 99% of airborne viruses and allergens. The 3-in1 HEPA filter uses 360 degree filtration to draw in air from all directions, removing impurities and ultraviolet light destroys the germs and viruses that can build up on the filter.

Unlike many other air purifiers, which can leave dead zones in rooms, TruSens uses two separate airflow streams to deliver purified air across the entire room. Our air purifiers have been rigorously lab-tested for maximum efficiency. They’ve been certified by the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation, so you can have the peace of mind that our air purifiers will be working to reduce the allergens in your home.

Air Quality Monitor

To further improve your indoor air quality and reduce allergens, use an air monitor. TruSens air purifiers for medium and large rooms come with our SensorPod air quality monitor. The SensorPod communicates with the TruSens so the air purifier can automatically adjust the fan speed for optimum purification. The air quality is also clearly displayed on the air purifier, so you know that TruSens is working properly to clean the air in your room.

Our SensorPod was meticulously tested against traditional purifiers with a built-in sensor. We found that the separate SensorPod was much more accurate in detecting pollutants. SensorPod work with TruSens to monitor the air quality across the entire room, not just immediately around the air purifier, meaning a higher coverage of cleaner air across the whole room.

Hypoallergenic Bed Sheets

If you struggle with dust-based allergies, you should take a look at your bedding. Hypoallergenic sheets are made from special materials that are resistant to dust, with a tightly-weaved design that keeps dust mites at bay.

Hypoallergenic sheets can be made from a range of materials, including cotton, silk, and microfibres. Bamboo is becoming an increasingly popular choice for hypoallergenic sheets, as the moisture-wicking bamboo plant helps to reduce mould growth as well as preventing dust mites from spreading. You should aim to get sheets that haven’t been treated with chemicals, as this can be an irritant for sensitive skin. Bed sheets should be washed in hot water once a week to help prevent exposure to allergens.

Hypoallergenic Mattress Protector

As well as allergy-proof bedding, you should also use a hypoallergenic mattress protector. Whilst you’ll be able to wash your sheets regularly to remove allergens, your mattress can’t be maintained in the same way. Instead, to protect your mattress from dust and pollen, use a hypoallergenic mattress protector that wraps around your entire mattress and zips up to close. With a mattress protector, you can remove it for regular washing, to help to keep allergens at bay.

Undyed Towels

If you have allergies to certain fabrics of chemicals used in fabric dying, undyed towels are a great solution. There are many organically-made, undyed towels available, usually made of woven cotton. These towels don’t have any chemicals or toxins that can irritate skin or cause an allergic reaction.

Look for lightweight undyed towels that dry quickly. This will reduce the chance of bacteria growing, which could otherwise also cause irritation.

Robot Vacuum

When you’re trying to allergy-proof your home, it’s important to keep on top of cleaning. If you don’t have time to vacuum every day, an alternative solution can be a robot vacuum. There are a range of different types of robot vacuums available. Most will use a laser navigation system to map your space and automatically vacuum by itself, using a sensor to keep from bumping into furniture or falling down steps.

With a robot vacuum, you can schedule when you want it to clean, and some come with an option to mop as well as vacuum. Dust and other allergens will be removed from the floor and trapped in the filter, helping to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction.

Steam Mop

For a more thorough clean for your floor, a steam mop can help to eliminate germs and dust mites. Steam mops heat the water up over 100 degrees Celsius and then sends a jet to the mop head which soaks into the mop pad. Steam mops can be much better at cleaning than traditional mops, working to absorb dirt and loosen tough grime.

Steam can help to sanitise the floor, with some steam mops able to destroy 99% of bacteria and germs without using chemicals that can cause irritation. Plus, steam will also kill dust mites, eliminating them from your home to prevent allergic reactions. For optimum allergy-proofing, floors should be steam-mopped at least once a week.

Fabric Vacuum

Allergens can easily get trapped in all sorts of fabrics, including curtains, cushions, sofas, and blankets. It might not always be possible to put these items into the laundry, so the solution is a fabric vacuum.

There are a range of fabric vacuums available, which use differing methods to clean your fabrics. Some use UVC light and heat to sanitise fabrics, kill dust mites and bacteria, and remove dust, pollen and pet dander with a HEPA filter. Others use water and soap for a deep clean, but you should take care with what chemicals you use if you are sensitive to irritants.
